The world is a slightly different place after today

….Because Bill Gates is no longer in charge of MicrosoftBill Microsoft

He is Microsoft!

Will there be any noticable differences? Probably not; perhaps just a little more of Ballmer everywhere *sigh*

So, will Windows 7 be delivered on schedule in around January 2010? Will it be as badly accepted as Vista seems to have been? All is to be seen in the coming years….

Opera 9.5 released

So, “Kestrel” has finally gone final.Click to visit Opera.com

It’s significantly faster at rendering than previous builds and there are a couple of good new features including a new default theme.

One of my favorite new features is that all the text on pages you visit is searchable so, for instance typing kestrel in your address bar after viewing this page would show you an extract from here. That’s useful.

I can’t help but think however that it was a little rushed towards the end (based on beta releases); though that is probably just so it is released before Firefox 3 (not that it should really matter) who announced their release date yesterday. Not a fan of Firefox though, so I don’t care. Opera, in my opinion is much better.

BBC makes a good move…..

…One of their few good moves in my opinion

Heroes Season 3 will be shown almost simultaneously with NBC on the Beeb.

Obviously, this is a further attempt to curb piracy, but I also think that it will make people happier at UK networks. Sky One was the first to do this with Lost & 24 showing just a few days after airing in the UK.

Of course, there are still people that will download the shows. But for many, Heroes isn’t worth downloading and the wait of a few days is not a big deal; especially if you are able to watch it on BBC HD.

A new iTunes version coming soon…..

The requirements for the iPhone 3G list iTunes 7.7 as a requirement.

I sincerely hope that it is a release that provides some fixes rather than just an upgrade to support the new phone.

For as long as I can remember now, iTunes hasn’t closed properly and I have to kill it’s process from task manager. And as of a couple of days ago, it won’t start up at all! I really need to get onto fixing that….. or rather, Apple do; Lots of people experience this problem when using the iPhone / iPod touch apparently….

/

Edit: have now fixed iTunes *touches wood* well, at least it opens; for the last two attempts it has closed properly too! I hope it continues. Was something to do with Symantec i.e. Norton’s LiveUpdate service (which I had disabled)…. Will have to investigate that link when I can.

Good luck, smartphones. The better, cheaper iPhone lands July 11th with 3G & GPS…

Apple finally revealed the iPhone 3g!

Software is the same but it has

  • 3G Data Speeds
  • GPS (which also combines cell-tower and WiFi positioning from before)
  • Awesome battery life (see pic below)
  • A very good price

I think the phone market just got dominated.

More details to follow.

Backup your Blog!

Since one of my friend’s blog was deleted (and with no explanation of why), he has had to create a new one, I feel it is necessary to backup my blog in the fullest manner possible.

You may already have copies of your posts from when you wrote them or sitting in your RSS readers etc…. But I think the best way of backing up as much of your [wordpress] blog as possible is by following the steps below:

  1. Go to your WordPress dashboard
  2. Click on Manage and then Export
  3. Click at the bottom
  4. Choose somewhere to save the file on your computer; keep the file safe.

You should repeat this process as often as you feel is necessary, ultimately it is up to you how often you backup.

I cannot guarantee that this will work. This back’s up your posts, tags and comments however, there may be some complications with restoring it that I have not foreseen. I am not responsible for any losses!

In order to restore from your backup, you need to go to your dashboard, click manage and then import. Select WordPress and give it the latest backup file.

Why have parts of my blog gone bold?

I didn’t do it!

Only seems to be the first page; and not even all the posts on said page are bold…. I’m confused.

Fixed now thanks to the wonderful and very quick WordPress support. 🙂

Microsoft Silverlight

Someone explain its purpose to me, please.Silverlight Logo

As far as I can see it’s just Microsoft’s version of flash that isn’t better in any clear way.

It doesn’t work with Opera properly at the moment; I guess that’s my main problem with it. Correction, it doesn’t work in Opera without some hassle.

The way they go about ‘deploying’ it annoys me… they just make certain sites of theirs require it so that you end up installing it (lots of them seem game related from my experience (bungie and parts of xbox.com) but I’m sure there are others)

It certainly isn’t as bad as Apple with Safari for Windows…. but at least I can see the value of an alternative browser….. not an alternative flash

Anywho, rant over…..

Thank you, Windows Complete PC backup, thank you

Having the whole of my computer backed up in this way just saved me so much time; I just put the Windows DVD in the drive and in about an hour, my PC was back to fully working (after I destroyed the windows installation while trying to triple boot my mac (Leopard, Vista & Ubuntu)).

That in itself makes Vista Ultimate worth the extra moneyz.
